What is Home Roasting?
Homeland Organic Coffee in Baltimore encourages home coffee roasting. Home roasting is relatively new adventure (technically it's a resurgent adventure, more on that later.) In recent years kitchen appliance manufacturers have developed counter top coffee roasting appliances for roasting 8 or so ounces of green coffee beans at a time. This allows the green coffee aficionado to buy green coffee beans and roast them at home, at their own pace on his or her own schedule. It also allows the serious green coffee buyer to roast the beans to a specific taste. (Not to mention, green coffee beans cost less than roasted beans.)
Home Coffee Roasters
There are essentially three kinds of coffee roasters:
- Drum Roasters
- Air Bed Roaster
- Stove-top Roasters
Stove-top roasters are by far the least expensive. Being very similar to popcorn poppers, these devices are easy to use and easy to clean. They may not, however provide the best tool for consistency of roast from bean to bean within a single roast or from batch to batch.
Air-Bed Roasters roast the beans by blowing hot air into the chamber holding the beans. This method of roasting depends on the length of time the heated air blows into the chamber.
Drum roasters are the costliest of the three types of roasters, but will give you results near to that of a professional roasting machine.
Please go to our Home Roasters page for more details on specific appliances.
Homeland Organic Coffee inBaltimore's preference is the drum roaster, but Homeland Organic Coffee in Baltimore also understands that we each have our own points of view on the cost of the products we buy.
